Akira Toriyama meant to finish the story at Frieza and after that he was literally trying to sink himself with more and more self parody and self satire? That's all while delivering the same comedy he was delivering before.

The American version takes out a lot of the comedy and most people still don't understand how the Japanese manga system works and don't know he was trying to get out of the contract and don't realize that it was satirical and not meant in any way to be taken seriously.

Also I'm assuming you've grown up and read more stuff that is more adult oriented... Why would you think that a show that was bastardized and made for kids that you can't see the satire of which means you don't understand the show would ever hold up for you?

It's kinda like the original Power Rangers. If you watch it and you just take it as a monster of the week show then yeah it's terrible, but if you pay attention there are epic story arcs and has incredibly funny satire in the episodes that are directed at adults.

Same thing with a lot of modern cartoons like Sponge Bob... To enjoy these things you have to get meta humor which most Americans don't.
